DIY Grow Bags

I've seen quite a few people using grow bags recently and I think it's great! Grow bags can really help you to get the most out of your space and be a more efficient home gardener. More efficient = growing more food in less space, with less work, and spending less money to do so. Ever heard the phrase "Work smarter, not harder"? Well that's our motto!

These grow bags are so easy to make and use old feed bags! If you keep chickens, ducks, or any type of animals where you buy feed in 50lb bags, you can make these! If you don't keep these animals yourself, ask a friend who does.

Before you start hoarding feed bags, check them to see what they are made of. Ours are made out of plastic (specifically #5). If you need to check if the type of plastic is safe, take a look at our other post that shows you how: Reusing Plastic Containers For Plants.

Constructing them is simple. Get your utility knife and poke a bunch of drainage holes in the bottom of the bag. Poking and twisting with the knife usually makes good sized holes. Once your drainage holes are completed, roll the top of the bag down evenly on all sides until you get the depth you are looking for. Fill them up with some good quality soil and you are good to go!!

Happy Growing!

  1. Very neat! Why spend money if you already have something you can put to good use? Now I just have to find a friend with feed bags I can take.

  3. I wonder if the smaller bags I get pet food in could be used. They're plastic and I hate just throwing them away.
